Copper clad bronze figure Penelope Asleep  by Pierre-Jules Cavelier (1814-1894)

  • Piece signed with the 'F Barbedienne' Foundry mark and has a seal of Reduction Mecanique A. Collas Brevette
  • Height: 14.5 inches (36.8 cm)
  • Cast by the eminent foundry Barbedienne. 'Barbedienne Fondeur'
  • Cavelier was a French sculptor from Paris. (b Paris, 30 Aug 1814; d Paris, 28 Jan 1894). The son of the painter and draughtsman Adrien Cavelier (1785–1867), he began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1831 at age 17 as the pupil of David d’Angers and Paul Delaroche.  
  • He received commissions from the Louvre, the Opera, the Palais Galliéra, Notre Dame & Saint-Augustin as well as the Gare du Nord and Palais de Longchamp. His works were accepted for exhibition at the Paris Salon from 1840. His work Pénélope was exhibited in the Salon of 1849 and was the object of reductions, one of which appeared at the Exposition Universalle of 1900.
  • The statue Pénélope is listed in the Barbedienne catalogue in the following dimensions: 95, 62, 36, 31 and 25 cm. The only size editions of this important bronze by Cavelier which have appeared at auction in the past two decades have all been either 25 or 31cm.
