Antique Ivory Asia Man and Monkey figurine 19th C
Appraisal description: Height 9 inches, width 2.5 inches.
This appears to be a juggler or entertainer with monkeys, resting his right foot on a crouching monkey, with another monkey on the juggler's head, steadying a puppet of a mythological lion. The man is shown with a number of juggling implements, a disc in his left hand, a long stick with a ring and ball in his right hand and the mask of a woman propped up on his right knee.
The jacket, shirt and trousers are elaborately decorated in incised and black and black/brown painted fashion, with geometric, wave and floral motifs, the fur of the monkey is incised and painted in great detail.
The group is place on an oval shaped base. The quality is excellent. The condition is termed good because of a one inch long fissure on the left arm. The piece appears to date from the second half of the 19th century.
The fine quality, subject matter and condition were taken into account.
